Completed jobs
Replaced choke cable with one that works!
Replaced temperature sender unit but I reckon this will make the gague read even hotter!
Investigated possibilty of fitting 'automatic' reversing light but there's no switch fitted to the bracket around the gear lever on the gearbox. I'll stick with a switch and warning light for now!
Coolant temperature sender
Temperature gauge is reading hot, the engine isn't running hot.
Either the sender is faulty or the gauge.
Replaced the sender with a new land rover one (560794).
I checked the sender before I fitted it
room temperature ~17 degrees 300 ohms
boiling water 45 ohms
I then performed the same tests on the sender I removed
room temperature 420 ohms
boiling water 70 ohms
When I earth the sender wire to the engine the gauge goes off the top (very hot). So the lower the resistence the hotter the gauge reads. This means the gauge will read even hotter with the new sender!!
The bodge would be to solder a variable resistor in series with the sender wire.

Interior Light(s)

The Series III land rovers weren't fitted with interior lights, it's surprising how little you can see on a winters evening! So one of the first tasks was to fit an interior light.
The original plan was to fit door switches to all three doors, the difficulty here is where to fit them! I couldn't see any way of installing them without seeing all the wiring. So for the moment the light is 'manually operated'.
Next job is to install two more lights in the back (one either side), I reckon flourescent tubes would be good - the short ones you find in caravans not the office ones!
I'd still like to have automatic interior lights but I need to find some other way of operating the switch.
